A Fifth Set of Psalm and Hymn Tunes (Thomas Clark)
General information
Publication
Thomas Clark's A Fifth Set of Psalm & Hymn Tunes was published for the author by James Peck in around 1809 (the Hymn Tune Index notes that this is the watermark date of the copy cited in the index, at GB-Lbl: B.1170.a.).
The planned publication of the work was advertised in the composer's A Fourth Set of Psalm and Hymn Tunes, London: [c1808]:
'The Author respectfully begs permission to return sincere thanks for the very favourable manner in which his compositions have been received; from the unexpected success of which, he is induced to announce his intention to commence very shortly, A new set of TUNES & PIECES to be published in twelve monthly numbers.'
A Fifth Set of Psalm & Hymn Tunes was later reissued by John Whitaker and Co., around 1820.
Publication date and place: 1809 (approx.) by James Peck in London.
Description of contents
The structure of A Fifth Set of Psalm & Hymn Tunes reflects its publication in twelve monthly numbers, a departure from Clark's previous practice. The main part of the work (excluding the title page) consists of 144 pages (143 pages of music, with an index on the last page), representing twelve sections consisting of twelve pages each. Each of the first eleven numbers is formed of four to eight strophic metrical psalm or hymn tunes, followed by a set-piece (a through-composed setting of a metrical text), while the twelfth number consists of six psalm or hymn tunes followed by an anthem. As a result, the set-pieces are distributed throughout the book: in contrast, Clark's A Fourth Set of Psalm and Hymn Tunes is a shorter work overall (59 pages of music) and the five set-pieces it includes are all at the end of the book.
In total, A Fifth Set of Psalm and Hymn Tunes contains 81 psalm or hymn tunes, 11 set-pieces and 1 anthem. Of the 11 set-pieces, 4 are classified by the Hymn Tune Index as such, while the other 7 are short enough that they are listed in the Hymn Tune Index as 'tunes' (resulting in a total of 88 'tunes' recorded in the HTI).
The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. The vocal bass part is figured.
