A New Set of Sacred Music (John Fawcett)

General information

Publication

John Fawcett's A New Set of Sacred Music was published for the author by James Peck. As well as being sold by Peck at 47 Lombard Street, London, the title page notes that it was 'Sold also by Mr Blanchard 14, City Road, by Mr Jas Shaw Bookseller Penrith Cumberland by the Author at Kendal, Westmoreland & by all Booksellers & Music Sellers.' It was priced at 6s, and the title page claims that it was entered at Stationers Hall, although the Hymn Tune Index does not record any identified entry. While the book is undated, Fawcett's obituary (Bolton Chronicle, 2 November 1867) describes it as being published shortly after his majority, and so it was probably published early in 1811.

Publication date and place: 1811 by James Peck in London.

Description of contents

The collection consists of 65 strophic hymn or metrical psalm tunes, and a dismission as a set-piece (a through-composed settings of a metrical text).

The music is laid out in full score with the air next to the bass: voicing indications in some of the tunes which have passages for treble duet show that in the full chorus sections, the air is to be sung by tenors. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. The vocal bass part is figured, and in some pieces there are instrumental bass notes to be played when the bass voices are silent. The dismission also has treble-range instrumental parts for two short symphonies (interludes between verses): instrumentation is not specified.
