General information

John Fawcett's A Second Sett of Psalm & Hymn Tunes was published for the author by James Peck in around 1813-14. As well as being sold by Peck at 47 Lombard Street, London, the title page notes that it was 'Sold also by Mr. Blanchard 14, City Road, Mr. Richardson Royal Exchange, By the Author at Kendal, Westmoreland & all Stationers & Music Sellers.' It was priced at 6s, and the title page claims that it was entered at Stationers Hall, although the Hymn Tune Index does not record any identified entry.

Publication date and place: 1813 by James Peck in London.

Description of contents

The collection consists of 8 set-pieces (through-composed settings of metrical texts), and 24 strophic hymn or metrical psalm tunes.

The music is laid out in full score with the soprano air next to the bass. The treble clef is used for soprano, alto, and tenor parts, with both the alto and tenor parts being notated an octave above sounding pitch. The vocal bass part is figured, and small notes printed on the soprano stave indicate a right-hand keyboard accompaniment part. Some of the settings also have independent organ bass-lines, horn parts, or, in the case of the opening set-piece The Promised Land, parts for first and second 'Violins or Flutes'.
