1. Neunzehn hundert drei und achtzig,
es war kurz nach Mitternacht
Und in Sérpuchow bei Moskau
saß ein Offizier auf Wacht,
Als die Sonne grade aufging
überm andern Teil der Welt
Und ein Glitzern in die Wolken
zaubert hoch am Himmelszelt,
An dem Tag, als Stanislaw Petrow die Welt rettete.

2. Hunderttausend auf den Straßen
gegen Bomben aus Uran
Von Politikern mit Spott als
Alarmisten abgetan
Und die Protestierer warnten
vor dem Schreckensgleichgewicht
Doch wie recht sie hatten wussten
auch die Alarmisten nicht
An dem Tag, als Stanislaw Petrow die Welt rettete.

3. Alle Anzeigen im Auge
merkte Petrow das Signal
Von gestarteten Raketen,
wenn auch nur in kleiner Zahl.
Ihm blieb eine Viertelstunde,
zu entscheiden was da war,
Doch es schien ihm nicht plausibel
und so schloss er: "Fehlalarm".
Das war der Tag, als Stanislaw Petrow die Welt rettete.

4. Heute steht die Uhr so nah wie
nie zuvor an Mitternacht.
Doch anstatt jetzt zu entspannen,
wird das Feuer angefacht.
Die Entscheidungszeit ist kürzer,
an Computer delegiert.
Doch kaum Eine scheints zu stören
und kaum Einer protestiert:
So als ob stets ein Stanislaw Petrow die Welt retten wird.

sidis en prigardstaci',
 Dum la suno ekleviĝis

 Briligante nubojn, kiuj
ŝvebis en ĉiela rond'
En la tago kiam Stanislav Petrov savis la mondon.

2. Ĉie estis protestantoj
multaj miloj sur la strat'
 Kaj avertis pri la risko
de nuklea armilad'.
 La regantoj mokis ilin,
ridis pri la angorem'.
 Kiom protestantoj pravis
eĉ ne sciis ili mem
En la tago, kiam Stanislav Petrov savis la mondon.

3. Observante ĉiujn ilojn
Petrov vidis sur ekran'
 La signalon, ke raketo
jam ekflugis de Montan'.
 Restis unu kvaronhoro
ĝis anonco de l' alarm',
 Malgraŭ pliaj kvar signaloj
taksis li je falsalarm'

4. La horloĝa temp' proksimas
nun eĉ pli al noktomez',
 Sed neniun ŝajnas ĝeni,

 Multaj serĉas eskaladon,
mokas pri diplomati'.

kaj demandi: Kial ni
Plu esperas, ke ĉiam ajn Petrov savos la mondon.

After midnight in September / Was a man on duty post
In a station for surveillance / While the night was dry and cold
But the sun was rising elsewhere / Spreading glitter with much grace
On the clouds that softly floated / High above a missile base.
On that day when Stanislav Petrov saved the world.

There were many who protested / Hundred thousands on the streets
And the politicians mocked them / Called them clueless alarmists.
Claimed deterrence was required / For no evil to occur,
And the alarmists themselves / Didn't know how right they were
On that day when Stanislav Petrov saved the world.

Watching in the bunker station / All the displays on the wall,
Petrov saw the warning signal / Forcing him to make a call
Yet he reasoned that one missile / Would not start an all-out war
And despite four other warnings / He announced a false alarm.
On that day when Stanislav Petrov saved the world.

90 seconds now till midnight / But nobody seems to care:
Many call for escalation / No protestors anywhere.
The reaction time is shorter / Delegated to AI.
And diplomacy is ruined /All this makes me wonder why
We still hope that again a new Petrov will save the world.
