Come viver potrò, dicea Damone,
Filli mia, senza te, se pur in questa
Partit’aspra il mio cor teco sì resta?
Quando Filli rispose
Con parlett’accort’ed amorose:
Quanto più grave noia
Ci port’ad hor della partita il giorno,
Tant’il felice tuo presto ritorno
Ci recara più car’e dolce gioia.
Però vivi, Damon, e ti conforti,
Che se’l tuo cor mi lasci, il mio ti porti.

German translation

Wie werde ich leben können, sprach Damon,
meie Phyliis, ohne dich, wenn bei diesem
bitteren Abschied mein Herz so bei dir bleibt?
Worauf Phyllis antwortete
mit klugen und leblichen Worten:
Je mehr argen Verdruss
uns jetzt der Tag des Abschieds bringt,
desto mehr gibt deine baldige glückliche Rückkehr
uns teure und süße Freude.

bitter parting my heart remains with you?
Whereuopn Phyllis answered
with wise and loving words:
The more grave annoyance
the day of parting now brings,
the more your speedy happy return

So live, Damon, and be comforted,
for if you leave your heart to me, I’ll give you mine.
