Biography
Daniel Protheroe was born in Ystradgynlais, South Wales. He was educated early by his mother and uncle Thomas Williams, musical director of the Ystradgynlais Methodist Church. At 16 he conducted the Ystradgynlais Choir, winning festival awards. He studied at Trinity College, London, and, at 19, passed an “Associateship in the “Society of Science, Letters and Art.” He relocated to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he founded the Scranton Harmonic Society and the Cymmrodorion Choral Society. He also became one of the youngest to graduate from Trinity College, Toronto. In addition, he was musical director of the Welsh Calvinist Methodist church, the Adams Ave. Methodist Episcopal Sunday school, Wood’s Business College, and the Y.M.C.A. He later moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, conducting several choirs, before moving to Chicago, Illinois. He continued conducting various choirs and taught at the Sherwood Music School. He died in Chicago. He composed a symphonic poem, two string quartets, anthems, part-songs, songs, and composed or arranged hymns, especially for the male voice.
