Ethel Mary Boyce was born in Chertsey, Surrey, England. She attended the Royal Academy of Music and was a pupil of Walter C. Macfarren. She never married but was briefly engaged to fellow student Sir Edward German. She was named Lady Goldsmid Scholar, won the Sterndale Bennett Prize, and was awarded the Lucas Medal for composition. She was known as a teacher of music and composed a number of works.
