English text
Fain would I sing of Cadmus' deeds,
And tell where brave Atrides bleeds.
My lyre, accustom'd to the tune,
Still sings of love, and love alone.
I lately chang'd its am'rous bent,
On heroes, battles, wars, intent:
In vain, alas! Its usual tone
Still sings of love, and love alone.
Ye valiant chiefs and kings, adieu,
My lyre will not admit of you;
For though I've chang'd its sprightly tone,
It still will sing of love, and love alone.
