Help:How can I delete a page?

From ChoralWiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

Most users cannot delete pages. For security reasons, only Sysops (commonly called "Admins") can delete pages. You can mark a page for deletion using one of two different delete templates. Sometimes, marking the page for cleanup is preferable.

Template:Delnow

This template is to mark a page for immediate deletion. Place this template at the top of the page, and do not remove any text from the page. Use the following

Syntax: {{subst:delnow|reason|user}}

where reason is a short description as to why the page should be deleted, and user is the username -- simply type 3 tildes ( ~~~ ) as the simplest way to supply your username.

Note that the template now must be substituted (with the code "subst:") to work properly.

Pages thus marked appear in Category:Delete immediately for Sysops to delete. Hence there should be no question as to the deletion. Sysops will consult the page before deleting it to make sure the page should indeed be deleted.

Instances when you should use this template (not exhaustive):

  • When moving editions of the same work to the same page.
  • When merging other pages.
  • When you wish to delete a test page that you have created for your own purposes, such as a user subpage.
  • When you find an uploaded file which is not appropriate for CPDL (because the work is copyright or wholly instrumental music or is not sheet music at all).

Template:Delreq

This template is to mark a page as proposed for deletion. Place this template at the top of the page, and do not remove any text from the page. Use the following

Syntax: {{subst:delreq|reason|user}}

where reason is a short description as to why the page should be deleted, and user is the username -- simply type 3 tildes ( ~~~ ) as the simplest way to supply your username.

Note that the template must be substituted (with the code "subst:") to work properly.

All pages bearing this template appear in Category:Delete requests for users to make note of and comment upon. After a period of typically 1 or 2 weeks, a decision will be made concerning the action to be taken on a request for deletion. Once the decision has been made, the discussion will be moved to Category:Archived deletion discussions.

Instances when you should use this template (not exhaustive):

  • When you find a page (article, category or template) created by someone else that you think is no longer used or perhaps was created as a test page.
  • When you find a page that think does not belong on CPDL.
