Biography

Joseph Netherclift was born in Whitechurch, Hampshire, England. He became a lithographic artist and printer in London and was an amateur musician. He was awarded a medal in 1829 for his method of lithography. He created lithographic facsimiles of historical documents by permission of the British Museum including the Magna Charta and the death warrant of Charles the First. He also published the book Autograph letters of illustrious women and was recognized as an expert in handwriting. As a composer, he wrote Psalm settings, hymns, glees, part-songs, and other music, winning a prize for a madrigal. He died in Brompton, London.
