French text Las ne fauldra cest chose toutte seure donnes luy foy si ne voules qu'il meure. Car aultrement sa leaulte fera que ta rigueur chascun aperchevera. Modern French Hélas, il faudra, c'est chose toute sûre, lui donner la foi si ne voulez qu'il meure. Car autrement sa loyauté fera que chacun apercevera ta rigueur.

English translation Alas, it is for certain that you have to give him hope if you don't want him dead. Otherwise his loyalty will show to all your cruelty.
