Biography
Mary Holden Coggeshall was born in New London, Connecticut, and was educated at the Female Academy in Norwich, Connecticut. Her husband was composer Theodore F. Seward. She was best known for her work in humanitarian causes and was a member of the International Sunshine Society; the Sorosis Club of New York City; the Woman’s Club of Orange, New Jersey; was twice president of the National Society of New England Women; and was president of the Blind Babies’ Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. She died on a train travelling to Buffalo, New York. Artistically, she was known for writing poems and hymn texts but did compose a small number of hymns and small choral songs often publishing under the pseudonym Agnes Burney. She collaborated extensively with her husband on a number of hymnbooks and choir training books.
