A moving sonnet about the imminent death of the poet's husband (1579).

Italian.png Italian text

Mirate, occhi miei lassi, intento e fisso,
Mentre potete, il caro vostr’oggetto,
Et godetevi a pien di quel diletto
Ch’adegu’in parte quel del paradiso;
Mirate gl’atti et l’angelico riso
Ch’accender puon’ogn’aggiacciato petto,
E gl’occhi vaghi tal d’amor ricetto,
Priva et deserta de l’usata copia;
Voi prevedendo la futura inopia,
Che vi minaccia l’empia dipartita,
Prendete preg’alcun breve ristoro.

das zum Teil dem des Paradieses gleicht;
beraubt und verlassen von der gewohnten Fülle;
angesichts des künftigen Mangels,
der euch durch den grausamen Abschied droht,
genießt bitte jeglichen kurzen Trost.

Behold, my languished eyes, attentively and firmly,
while you may, your dear object,
and rejoice completely in that delight
that equals partly the one of paradise;
behold the deeds and the angelic laugh,
which could inflame every frozen breast,
and the eyes, mild by the love received,
that never yet saw herself parted from them.
The hour is drawing near that my treasure
will leave my life desolate and poor,
bereft and deprived of the accustomed abundance;
seeing the future dearth,
that the cruel parting is threatening,
please enjoy every short relief.
