General Information

Title: Miserere mei Deus
Composer: Alexander Utendal
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SSATB
Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1577 in Liber tertius sacrarum cantionum, no. 6
Description: Source: Book Three of Utendal's motets, Gerlach & Berg, Nuremberg, 1577. Notable for the exotic chords which appear in bars 23-24: E flat major followed by A flat major and then D flat major. (The score supplied here does not show these as such, because of its transposition.) Although Robert Fayrfax, in his remarkable Maria plena virtute, probably composed around 1500, had ventured as far afield as a chord of A flat major, evidently for the purpose of expressing the text, D flat is a step further, obviously.
