Original text and translations

English.png English text

My prime of youth is but a frost of cares,
My feast of joy is but a dish of pain,
My crop of corn is but a field of tares,
And all my goods are but vain hope of gain.
The day is past and yet I saw no sun,
And now I live, and now my life is done.

German.png German translation

Mein jugendlicher Stolz ist nichts, außer eiskalter Sorgen,
ich habe keine Freuden, nur ständigen Schmerz,
ich ernte nichts, außer einem leeren Feld,
mein ganzes Habe ist nichts, außer eitler Hoffnung auf Gewinn;
der Tag ist vergangen, und ich sah noch keine Sonne,
noch lebe ich, doch schon ist mein Leben vollbracht.
