Non vuò pregare chi non m'ascolta,
Chè la mia diva d'amore è priva;
La ride, la ghigna, la burla,
la sprezza chi fa l'amore.
Ahimè'l mio core!

Grido pietade la notte e'l giorno,
Ma la nemica non ode mica;
L'è sorda, l'è muta, l'è cieca,
l'è priva di vero amore.
Ahimè'l mio core!

Sai ch'io ti dico: tu vai penando,
E'l tempo perdi con gli anni verdi;
Si prende a sollazzo, a piacere,
a conforto l'altrui dolore.

English translation

I won't pray to one who is not listening,
My goddess is lacking of love;
She laughs, sneers, jokes,
She despises one who feels love.
Alas, my poor heart!

I cry for mercy day and night,
But the enemy doesn't listen;
