Occhi, quella pietà, che mi mostrate,
Pietà non è, ma doppia crudeltate;
Che, perché meco il mio dolor non mora,
Di vana speme il cor nodrite ogni hora:
Nova di dolor sorte
Dar con finta pietà vita a la morte;
Acciò ch’altri languendo
Viva sempre morendo;
Ma spero, o luci infide,
Che s’io non morirò di tal martire,
Morrò di duol di non poter morire.

Augen, dieses Mitleid, das ihr mir zeigt,
ist kein Erbarmen, sondern doppelte Grausamkeit;
denn damit bei mir mein Leiden nicht vergeht,
nährt ihr das Herz jede Stunde mit vegeblicher Hoffnung:
eine neue Art des Leids:
mit falschem Mitleid dem Tod Leben geben;
damit der andere leidend
immer sterbend lebt:
aber ich hoffe, untreue Lichter,
dass, wenn ich nicht an solcher Qual sterbe,
ich dann sterbe am Schmerz, nicht sterben zu können.

Eyes, the pity you show me
isn’t mercy, bu doubled cruelty;
for you, in oder to not let die my sorrow,
do nourish my heart every hour by vain hope:
a new sort of sorrow:
do give live to death by feigned pity;
to make the other one languishingly live
while always dying;
but I hope, infidel lights,
that I, if not dying by such torment,
I will die by the pain of not being able to die.
