Clementine Vulgate (Psalm 128)

Latin.png Latin text

1  Canticum graduum. Saepe expugnaverunt me a juventute mea, dicat nunc Israël;
2  saepe expugnaverunt me a juventute mea: etenim non potuerunt mihi.
3  Supra dorsum meum fabricaverunt peccatores; prolongaverunt iniquitatem suam.
4  Dominus justus concidit cervices peccatorum.
Benediximus vobis in nomine
Domini.

Church of England 1662 Book of Common Prayer

English.png English text

1  Many a time have they fought against me from my youth up: may Israel now say.
2  Yea, many a time have they vexed me from my youth up: but they have not prevailed against me.
3  The plowers plowed upon my back: and made long furrows.
4  But the righteous Lord: hath hewn the snares of the ungodly in pieces.
5  Let them be confounded and turned backward: as many as have evil will at Sion.
6  Let them be even as the grass growing upon the house-tops: which withereth afore it be plucked up;
7  Whereof the mower filleth not his hand: neither he that bindeth up the sheaves his bosom.
8  So that they who go by say not so much as, The Lord prosper you: we wish you good luck in the Name of the Lord.

Káldi fordítás

Hungarian.png Hungarian text

Ének a fölmenetekre. Gyakorta ostromlottak engem ifjúságomtól… mondja meg most Izrael,
gyakorta ostromoltak engem ifjúságomtól: de semmit sem tehettek nekem.
Hátamon kovácsoltak a bűnösök, sokáig űzték gonoszságukat;
de az igaz Úr megtöré a bűnösök nyakát.
Szégyenűljenek meg és hátráljanak mindnyájan, kik Siont gyűlölik.
Legyenek, mint a háztetők füve, mely mielőtt kiszaggattatnék, elszárad;
melylyel az arató nem tölti meg kezét, sem ölét a kévekötő,
és hol nem mondják az átmenők: Az Úr áldása legyen rajtatok, áldunk titeket az Úr nevében.

Metrical paraphrase by Nahum Tate and Nicholas Brady, New Version, 1698

English.png English text

1. From my youth up, may Israel say,
They oft have me assailed,
Reduced me oft to heavy straits,
But never quite prevailed.

2. They oft have plowed my patient back
with furrows deep and long,
But our just God has broke their chains,
And rescued us from wrong.

3. Defeat, confusion, shameful rout,
Be still the doom of those,
Their righteous doom, who Zion hate,
And Zion's God oppose.

4. Like corn upon our house's tops,
Untimely let them fade.
Which too much heat, and want of root,
Has blasted in the blade:

5. Which in his arms no reaper takes,
But unregarded leaves;
Nor binder thinks it worth his pains
To fold it into sheaves.

6. No traveler that passes by,
Vouchsafes a minute's stop
To give it one kind look, or crave
Heaven's blessing on the crop.
