Description: Psalms 14 and 53 are to a large extent identical. Both are part of the Genevan Psalter. The melody that is the basis of my composition most likely dates back to the sixteenth century. In my composition I have included both a Dutch and an English translation. The composition contains classical and modern arrangements of the melody and text. The Dutch translation is that of Jacobus Revius (1640), the English translation is that of W. van der Kamp (1972).

1. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their horrid deeds they cherish;
Not one of them does good, and just men perish.
None calls upon the LORD, none sings His laud
Or fears His rod.

2. The LORD looks down from heaven’s holy throne
To see if there are any that act wisely.
O God, not one seeks Thee; they all despise Thee:
See how the sons of men, to evil prone,
Thy law disown.

1. De dwase spreeckt in syn verstockt gemoet,
Daer is geen God, hierom is boos syn wandel,
Hy geeft hem gants tot grouwelijcken handel,
Daer is niet een van allen, die daer doet
Het minste goet.

2. God siet in ernst van synen hemel neer
En mercket op het menschelijck geslachte,
Of yemant met verstandigen gedachte
Na het bevel van aller Heeren Heer
Syn gangen keer.
