Biography

Henry Louis Reginald DeKoven was born in Middletown. Connecticut. He was raised in England and graduated from St. John’s College, Oxford. He also studied in Stuttgart; Frankfort; Florence, Italy; Vienna, and Paris, France. Returning to the U.S., he was music-critic for the Chicago ‘Evening Post,’ the New York ‘World,’ the ‘Journal,’ and ‘Harper’s Weekly.’ He also organized and conducted the Philharmonic Orchestra at Washington, DC. From 1887 he was one of the most successful American composers of light opera. He died in Chicago. His compositions include grand operas, operettas, over 400 songs and incidental pieces, including an orchestral suite, ballets, and a sonata for piano.
