The first line of the inscription in the source in fact reads "Maxima musarum nostrarum gloria White" (variously abbreviated in the different partbooks); the second line is variously punctuated but should probably have a single comma after "peris", as in two of the partbooks, and actually translates as "you perish, but your muse remains eternally" (postponed 'sed'). Great, thanks for this. I'd just mistyped the Latin (doubled the musarum for some reason!), and misread the second line - I take your point about the translation, and have duly amended it. Many thanks! Edward Tambling 12:47, 5 January 2011 (CST)
