Giammateo

It seems that Giammateo is the preferred form according to Grove, Wikipedia, IMSLP, HOASM etc. Should the page be renamed? —Carlos Email.gif 01:05, 15 June 2012 (CDT)

The first editions and anthologizers (Prozske and Torchi) at IMSLP are about equally split on calling him Matteo or Giovanni, so the present Giovanni Matteo Asola may be the least confusing page name. Although more research might be in order, for me right now it's enough that the Library of Congress seems to have never heard of Giammateo. Wait, I found a redirect, along with a "Mass in the eight mode, for 4 equal voices a cappella by John Matthew Asola" Richard Mix 03:55, 17 June 2012 (CDT)
Richard, thanks for your feedback. In the talk page of the wikipedia article there's also some arguing that Giammateo is not a proper Italian spelling for this name, but strangely the Grove Dictionary gives it as the preferred form and Giovanni Matteo as a second option. But considering your arguments, I'm now inclined to leave things as they are. —Carlos Email.gif 11:40, 17 June 2012 (CDT)

Disambiguation of masses

I'm wondering whether Missa in Primi Toni (à quatro voci) (Giovanni Matteo Asola) can easily be brought into line with our page-naming tradition. Is there only one Missa primi toni a 4, or is dab from Missa primi toni a 4 impari necessary?

The publications presently listed on the composer page are a fraction of those at NG. Those concerned with 4vv masses are:

  • Missae octonis compositae [1–4] tonis … continentur, facilitati, brevitati mentique sanctorum Concilii tridentini patrum accomodatae … 4vv (1586)

IMSLP has the 1st 2, and that clarifies that 8 masses in toni are spread across 2 volumes ("second libro" [of 'Book 1'?] ). 'Book 2' ("Secondus liber") seems to be followed by a 'prequel' to another cycle of masses in the 8 tones. That is, unless I've become confused. ;-) Richard Mix (talk) 23:01, 28 May 2020 (UTC)

Now I notice that CPDL #58872-77 gives the source as In Venetia, Presso Giacomo Vincenzi, & Riccardo Amadino compagni, MDLXXXVI and is the same as the 1580 mass. Richard Mix (talk) 23:13, 28 May 2020 (UTC)
