Description: A setting of a text from Genesis Chapter 37 rarely set to polyphony, in which Joseph's brothers present their father Jacob with Joseph's blood-stained cloak, implying that Joseph has been killed by a wild animal. Published by Susato, Antwerp. The original clefs were C1, C3, C4, C4, F4. :Motet for 5 voices by Clemens non Papa, recounting the incident in Genesis Chapter 37 in which Jacob is confronted with the apparent death of his favourite son.

Latin text Tulerunt autem fratres eius tunicam illius mittentes ad patrem quam cum cognovisset pater ait, fera pessima devoravit filium meum Ioseph. Videns Iacob vestimenta Ioseph, scindit vestimenta sua cum fletu et ait fera pessima devoravit filium meum Ioseph.

English translation [Joseph’s] brothers took his robe and gave it to their father. When he saw it, their father said, ‘A wild beast has devoured my son, Joseph.’ When Jacob saw Joseph’s robe, he tore his clothes and said, weeping, ‘A wild beast has devoured my son, Joseph.’
