Score submissions to CPDL must meet the following criteria:

  1. They must be either choral or solo vocal works. Here is clarification of some unusual situations:
    • Choral arrangements of instrumental works are welcome but instrumental arrangements of choral works are not.
    • A work which contains mainly instruments and a small number of choral/solo vocal parts is also welcome.
    • Editions which are of the instrumental parts for a work which contains choral or solo vocal elements are also welcome.
    • Large works which have some instrumental movements and some movements with choral and/or solo vocal forces may have those instrumental movements contributed.
  2. Editions must be of works which are in the public domain in the USA (including all elements of the work included in the edition - music, text, any translations, editorial material, etc.)
  3. Original works must be contributed with the composer/arranger's express permission and be released under a free license (such as the CPDL license). On CPDL a "free license" is taken to, as a bare minimum, allow copying and printing the files the composer/arranger makes available and performance without charging royalties or any other fee. If the composer wishes to collect royalties then CPDL isn't the right place for their works. The "free license" may prevent derivative works and commerical recording and broadcasting.
  4. Editions of PD works or original works contributed to CPDL must be available as an "image" file as a minimum. On CPDL, an "image" file is one which may be viewed and printed with freely available software alone; eg. PDF (may be viewed with Adobe Reader), Scorch (when embedded into a webpage, may be viewed with Sibelius Scorch), Finale Notepad (may be vied and printed with the Finale equivalent to Scorch), GIF or some other image file type. In general, the preferable format for "image" files on CPDL is PDF since this is a universal format which will maintain the editor's design and formatting on almost any computer.
Other files are not required but are very useful for people browsing the site. Typically, these include a MIDI file and a source file. The source file may be useful if there are mistakes in the edition which another contributor may correct if the editor is not contactable.
