German text 1. Laß, o Welt, o laß mich sein! Locket nicht mit Liebesgaben, laßt dies Herz alleine haben seine Wonne, seine Pein! 2. Was ich traure, weiß ich nicht, es ist unbekanntes Wehe; immerdar durch Tränen sehe ich der Sonne liebes Licht. 3. Oft bin ich mir kaum bewußt, und die helle Freude zücket durch die Schwere, so mich drücket, wonniglich in meiner Brust. 4. Laß, o Welt, o 1aß mich sein! Locket nicht mit Liebesgaben, laßt dies Herz alleine haben seine Wonne, seine Pein!

English translation 1. Leave, O world, oh, let me be! Tempt me not with well-meant cheering; leave this heart to lonely grief in both its bliss and agony! 2. Why I’m sad, I do not know, it’s an undetermined grieving. Sometimes, when my tears are streaming, sun light makes a glorious show. 3. Oft my thoughts are far apart and intense joy briefly rushes Through my sadness and then flushes blissfully into my heart. 4. Leave, O world, oh let me be! Tempt me not with well-meant cheering; leave this heart to lonely grief in both its bliss and agony!
