Text and translations

Latin.png Latin text

1. Adoro te devote, latens Deitas,
quae sub his figuris vere latitas:
tibi se cor meum totum subjicit,
quia te contemplans totum deficit.

2. Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur,
sed auditu solo tuto creditur;
credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius:
nil hoc verbo Veritatis verius.

3. In cruce latebat sola Deitas,
at hic latet simul et humanitas:
ambo tamen credens atque confitens,
peto quod petivit latro poenitens.

4. Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor:
Deum tamen meum te confiteor:
fac me tibi semper magis credere,
in te spem habere, te diligere.

5. O memoriale mortis Domini!
Panis vivus vitam praestans homini!
Praesta meae menti de te vivere
et te illi semper dulce sapere.

6. Pie Pellicane, Jesu Domine,
me immundum munda tuo sanguine,
cujus una stilla salvum facere
totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.

7. Jesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio,
oro, fiat illud quod tam sitio:
ut te revelata cernens facie,
visu sim beatus tuae gloriae.
Amen.

8. Te cum revelata cernam facie,
visu tandem laetus tuae gloriae;
Patri, tibi laudes et Spiritui,
dicam beatorum iunctus coetui.

Sangbare Übersetzung von Teresia Benedicta vom Kreuz (Edith Stein)

1. Sieh mich, verborg'ne Gottheit, anbetend tief vor Dir,
Du, in Gestaltenhülle wahrhaft verborgen mir;
Denn in Deinem Anschau'n schmilzt mein Herz dahin.

Was Gott-Sohn gesprochen, ist mir Glaubenshort,

4. Nicht wie Thomas schaue Deine Wunden ich,
Meinen Gott doch nenn' ich, fest bekennend, Dich;
Fester laß mich stets Dir glaubend hängen an,
Sich'rer hoffend immer, tiefer liebend nah'n.

5. Denkmal Du, gemahnend an des Herren Tod,
Gibst dem Menschen Leben, Du lebend'ges Brot;
Meines Herzens Leben sei nur Du allein,
Laß es Deine Süße stets empfinden rein.

6. Pelikan voll Liebe, Jesu, Herre mein,

Italian.png Italian translation

1. Adoro Te devotamente, o Dio nascosto,

3. Sulla croce era nascosta la sola Divinità,
Ma qui è celata anche l'Umanità:
Eppure credendo e riconoscendo entrambe,
Chiedo ciò che domandò il ladrone pentito.

4. Le piaghe, come Tommaso, non vedo,
Tuttavia riconosco Te mio Dio.
Fa ch'io creda sempre più in Te,
Che in Te abbia speranza, che Ti ami.

6. O pio Pellicano, Signore Gesù,
Purifica me, immondo, col tuo sangue,
Del quale una sola goccia può salvare
Il mondo intero da ogni peccato.

English.png English translation

1. Thee we adore, O hidden Saviour, Thee,
Who in Thy sacrament dost deign to be;
Both flesh and spirit at Thy presence fail,
Yet here Thy presence we devoutly hail.

5. O blest memorial of our dying Lord,
Who living Bread to men doth here afford!
O may our souls forever feed on Thee,
And Thou, O Christ, forever precious be.

6. Fountain of gladness, Jesus, Lord and God,
Cleanse us, unclean, with Thy most cleansing blood;
Increase our faith and love, that we may know
The hope and peace which from Thy presence flow.

7. O Christ, whom now beneath a veil we see,
May what we thirst for soon our portion be,
To gaze on Thee unveiled, and see Thy face,
The vision of Thy glory and Thy grace.

8. Contemplating, Lord, Thy hidden presence,
grant me what I thirst for and implore,
in the revelation of Thy essence
to behold Thy glory evermore.

Translation by James Russell Woodford (1850)
