Ardant amour souvent me fait instance
de déclarer mon coeur ouvertement,
mais du refus la si grande doutance
ne me le veut permettre nullement.

Dont à jamais souffrirai le tourment
qu'amour craintif donne aux siens pour martire,
si Dieu ne fait pour mon allégement
qu'elle entende mon vouloir sans le dire.

English translation

An ardent passion often doth me urge
In public to declare what’s in my heart,
And yet refusal looms as such a scourge
For fear of it I cannot even start.

Thus ever to avoid the pois’nous dart
With which the prey of coward Love are shot,
As God will nothing do to salve my smart
May she perceive my will though uttered not.
