- Edition notes: The order of staves in the source is as given here: no indication is given as to whether the first stave is to be sung by trebles, tenors or both, but it has here been treated as a treble part. The second stave is printed in the alto clef in the source.
- The last two notes of the bass part in bar 20, given here as quavers, are printed in the source as crotchets: the preceding note is printed in the source, as here, as a dotted minim tied to a minim.
- The second and third verses of the text are printed after the music in the source, and have been underlaid editorially.

Description: A carol setting by Joseph Stephenson, from page 42 of his The Musical Companion, [1771]. Hymn Tune Index tune number 3537.
The text of the carol is based on a 'Hymn for Christmas-Day' published on pp. 516-517 of the Gentleman's Magazine for November 1748 (Vol. 18, No. 11), with the attribution 'The Words by Mr OATS ... of Devonshire'.
Verses 1 and 2 of the text given by Stephenson are similar to the corresponding verses in the Gentleman's Magazine text (which has five verses in total). Stephenson's verse 3 is not derived from any of the Gentleman's Magazine verses.
