Aura dolce soave
Ch’ai bei crin d’or d’intorno
Scherzando vai del mio bel sol adorno,
Deh, se pietà in te regna,
Me, ch’in sì duri nodi
Sto preso in vari modi,

Mentre rincrespi e innondi
Le chiome, e in un confondi
Mill’altri nodi & intricati lacci,
Onde in catene avolto

Sweet tender breeze,
that plays around with the golden locks
of my adorned beautiful sun,
alas, if pity reigns within you,
loosen me, who in such tight knots
am caught in various modes,
so that the work be worthy of you.

But woe to me, for ever more I tie myself up,
while I curl and undulate
the hair, and confound into one
thousand other knots and intricate fetters,
wherefore I shall always live wrapped in chains
and never shall be untied.
