Fiammeggiavano in ciel chiare le stelle,
Che qual hor la mia luce apparir suole;
Tosto lo rende nubiloso, e scuro.
Così vince Madonna (o rare e sole
Gratie, ch’infuse in mortal corpo furo)
E le stelle e la Luna e l’Alba e’l Sole.
da zu dieser Stunde mein Licht zu erscheinen pflegt;
Brightly the stars flamed in the sky,
and even brighter glinted the moon, as
at the appearance of the rosy Aurora
I beheld her as well as those quickly obscured:
for behold, girdled by lights and flames,
Phoebus rises radiantly out from the waves,
who soon chases them away, and discolours
the cheeks pretty above measure, and beautiful.
But he cannot feel himself secure,
for at this hour my light usually appears;
soon she makes him appear dull and dark.
Thus conquers my lady (oh rare and single
graces that have been infused in a mortal body)
the stars as well as the moon, the dawn and the sun.
