  • (Posted 2018-08-30)  CPDL #51068:
Editor: Mick Swithinbank (submitted 2018-08-30).   Score information: A4, 7 pages, 83 kB   Copyright: CPDL
Edition notes: This edition presents only the first section of three. However, it is substantial enough (90 bars) to stand on its own. The edition retains the original pitch and note values. Certain unavoidable editorial corrections to notes have been noted within the score.

General Information

Title: Gaude Maria virgo
Composer: Gerardus Mes
Lyricist:

Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: STTBB
Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1556 in Liber tertius sacrarum cantionum diversorum autorum, quatuor, quinque, et sex vocum (Jacob Baethen, Dusseldorf), no. 17
Description: This is apparently the only surviving motet by Mes (also a composer of souterliedeken vernacular psalm settings), who is thought to have been a pupil of Clemens non Papa. It was published in Düsseldorf in 1556 with the unusual key signature of three flats, and the fact that it includes numerous A flats makes it desirable to add some editorial D flats as well - most exotic. The original clefs were C1, C3, C3, C4, F4.
