Description: First published by Amos Pilsbury in The United States Sacred Harmony, 1799, p. 90, but not attributed by him to anyone. Probably a folk hymn. Words by Benjamin Beddome, 1787, with four stanzas; another version, apparently authentic, appeared posthumously in 1818 with five stanzas.
