General Information

Title: Iam mundi linque vana
Composer: Orazio Vecchi
Lyricist: Simone Molinaro ?

Number of voices: 6vv   Voicing: SSATBB

Genre: SacredMotet

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1610 in Fatiche Spirituali, Book 1, no. 6

Description: This is a contrafact of Vecchi's Deh lascia Filli i fiori by Simone Molinaro.
Molinaro did not simply fit a sacred text to the music, but transposed it down a fifth, altered the octave for two voices, interchanged some sections between voices, and made some minor adjustments. But thus he simplified the structure, because in repetitions he used the same music for the same voices, whereas Vecchi used different voices.

Latin.png Latin text

Iam mundi linque vana
A recto avocant
Namque infida
Ad Cristum verte mentem
Cum quo letari poteris sectando
Dic o benigne Iesu
Cadenti succurre in te speranti.

German.png German translation

Lass fahren nun die Eitelkeiten der Welt,
sie führen ab vom rechten Weg,
denn sie sind trügerisch.
Wende deinen Geist zu Christus,
denn jenen folgend könntest du sterben.
Sprich: O gütiger Jesus,
hilf den Strauchelnden, die an dich glauben.

Translation by Gerhard Weydt

Relinquish now the vanities of the world,
they lead you off the right way,
for they are treacherous.
Turn your mind to Christ,
for following these you might die.
Speak: O benign Jesus,
help the falling that believe in you.
