Description: The English language carol Infant holy, Infant lowly is arranged from the traditional Polish carol W zlobie lezy! appearing in Spiewniczek Piesni Koscielne (1908). It was translated from Polish to English (1921) by Edith M. Reed and arranged by her in 1926. The Polish text is probably attributable to Piotrowi Skardze (1536-1612) and appeared in the Michał M. Mioduszewski collection Śpiewnik kościelny czyli Pieśni nabożne z melodiami w Kościele Katolickim używane, Kraków 1838. The original Polish melody (tune) is from the 18th century.

Polish text W żłobie leży! Któż pobieży Kolędować małemu Jezusowi Chrystusowi Dziś nam narodzonemu? Pastuszkowie przybywajcie Jemu wdzięcznie przygrywajcie, Jako Panu naszemu. My zaś sami z piosneczkami Za wami pośpieszymy, I tak Tego Maleńkiego Niech wszyscy zobaczymy; Jak ubogo narodzony Płacze w stajni położony, Więc go dziś ucieszymy.

English text by Edith M. Reed Infant holy, Infant lowly, for His bed a cattle stall; Oxen lowing, little knowing, Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Swift are winging angels singing, noels ringing, tidings bringing: Christ the Babe is Lord of all. Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping vigil till the morning new Saw the glory, heard the story, tidings of a Gospel true. Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow, praises voicing, greet the morrow: Christ the Babe was born for you.
