A leading Humanist and pedagogue as well as composer, Campanus (called Vodňanský after his birthplace) was a professor of Greek, Latin and history at Prague University. His hymns and Latin psalm paraphrases appeared in ''Odae sacrae'' (1613); a second volume, ''Sacrarum odarum libri duo'' (1618) includes music in homorhythmic SATB settings reminiscent of the ''vers mesurés'' of [[Jean-Antoine de Baïf]] and [[Claude Le Jeune]].
