Biography

Nothing is known for certain about John Ensdale. There was an Ensdale family in Lichfield that was associated with the guild of St Mary and St John, Lichfield, that was attached to the chapel of St Mary in the market-place. A John Ensdale is encountered in 1527/8, 1529/30 and 1537/8, but this man is not known to have been a musician. However, the surname was unusual, so some link is possible. The style of the composer's only known piece, 'Haec dies', suggests that he was active during the earlier part of the sixteenth century.
