General Information

Title: Lamentations for Holy Saturday, Lesson Two
Composer: Cristóbal de Morales
Lyricist:
Number of voices: 5vv   Voicing: SATTB
Genre: SacredLamentation

Language: Latin
Instruments: A cappella

First published: 1564 in Lamentationi a quatro, a cinque et a sei voci, no. 8
Description: The final 'Jerusalem convertere' section includes a sixth voice, an extra tenor part. Source: Lamentationi di Morales a 4 a 5 et a 6 voci, pub. Gardano, 1564. A paper by Manuel del Sol discusses the attribution of Lamentations to Morales in Roman manuscript sources, which was already complicated: some are considered to have indeed been composed by him, others to have been composed by different composers, identified or otherwise, while some were apparently by Morales but altered. Some doubt must therefore presumably surround Gardano’s attribution of the Lamentations in this print. The Saturday set are for more voices, including higher ones, than those for Thursday and Friday.
