Born: 31 May 1773

Died: 28 Apr 1853

Biography Born in Berlin and educated at Göttingen, Tieck joined the Jena circle with Novalis and August & Friedrich Schlegel in 1799, settling permanently in Dresden in 1819. He was brother to Sophie Tieck and father of Dorothea Tieck. His best known story, Blonde Eckbert, became an opera by Judith Weir (1994), and lyrics from his novel are the material of Brahms' Die schöne Magelone Op. 33.
