General information
Lyricist: Torquato Tasso
Settings by composers
- Carlo Gesualdo SSATB
- Claudio Merulo SSATTB
Texts and Translations
Both Gesualdo and Merulo use a text which differs from the printed version of Tasso's Rime, lines 4 and 5 there read: "perché negli occhi miei/fiso tu rivolgessi", which doesn't change the meaning, nevertheless. Indeed, the original text could even be applied to the music. The variants used by Merulo are shown in parentheses.
