Biography

German theologian, reformer, composer, and hymn writer. He published the first extensive Protestant hymnal in 1531, made up mostly of German translations and harmonizations of hymns of the Bohemian Brethren. "He was initially a Franciscan in Breslau and after 1518 preacher of the Unity of the Bohemian Brethren. He also wrote theological writings and hymns, some of which he set to music" (de.wikipedia).
