Life
Born: 25 May 1572 in Kassel
Died: 17 March 1632 in Eschwege
Biography Moritz, also called Maurice the Learned, was Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel from 1592 to 1627, a theater builder and patron of Heinrich Schütz and John Dowland as well as musician in his own right and a man of letters. A Calvinist, he endeavored to maintain an alliance with Sweden, even as his realm bore the brunt of the 30 Years War and his heavily taxed subjects secretly negotiated with Tilly. He was forced to abdicate in 1627.
