General Information
Title: Regali ex progenie
Composer: Adam of Fulda
Number of voices: 4vv Voicing: SATB
Genre: Sacred, Motet
Language: Latin
Instruments: a cappella
Published: 1500
Description: An unusual, four-part 15th-century Christmas Lied from the Nicholas Apel Codex (c.1500) with a cantus firmus in the Tenor, against a melodic phrase, set initially in imitation, in the other three voices. Throughout the piece, the melody is repeated in the upper two voices with rhythmic and slight melodic variation. While there is little harmonic motion, the piece beautifully develops tension throughout until the conclusion. The vocal lines have long, extended melismae on single syllables, typical of the period.

Mary, sprung from regal progeny
shines brightly with mind and spirit,

we may be aided by her prayers.
