General Information

Title: Roger and Sue
Composer: Johann Adolph Hasse
Lyricist: Anonymous
Number of voices: 1v   Voicing: Solo high
Genre: SecularAria

Language: English
Instruments: Basso continuo

First published: 1746
Description: From "Calliope or English Harmony. A Collection of the most celebrated English and Scots songs", London, 1746. Many of the songs from this collection were probably composed for the London pleasure gardens, particularly Vauxhall. The comedy in this piece derives from a common device of the period: the mis-match of a vulgar subject described demotically married with a high art (Italian opera seria) tune, in this instance 'Apenna amor sen nasce' from Hasse's Cleofide.
