Karpiniec was born in 1953 in Hobart, Tasmania, and has spent most of his life in that city. His first musical training was as a student at New Town High School, where he started playing the flute, the study of which he later continued at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. As an undergraduate he developed strong interests in choral music, composition and arranging. Since completing his studies he has worked in music education, and occasionally finds time to write or arrange music. He has at times contributed to the repertoire of the Tasmanian Chorale and the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, and also supplied three pieces for the Australian Music Examination Board's Series 6 examination grade books. A number of his student string orchestra works have been published by Middle C Associates of Geelong. He has recently taken to practising the saxophone, but his neighbours are yet to complain.
