German text 1. Des Schäfers sein Haus und das steht auf zwei Rad,  steht hoch auf der Heiden, so frühe wie spat; und wenn nur ein mancher so'n Nachtquartier hätt'! Ein Schäfer tauscht nicht mit dem König sein Bett. 2. Und käm' ihm zu Nacht auch was Seltsames vor, er betet sein Sprüchlein und legt sich aufs Ohr. …ein Geistlein, ein Hexlein, so luftige Wicht', sie klopfen ihm wohl, doch er antwortet nicht. 3. Einmal doch, da ward es ihm wirklich zu bunt: es knopert am Laden, es winselt der Hund; …nun ziehet mein Schäfer den Riegel― ei schau! Da stehen zwei Störche, der Mann und die Frau. 4. Das Pärchen, es machet ein schön Kompliment, es möchte gern reden. Ach, wenn es nur könnt'! Was will mir das Ziefer? Ist sowas erhört? Doch ist mir wohl fröhliche Botschaft beschert. 5. Ihr seid wohl dahinten zu Hause am Rhein? Ihr habt wohl mein Mädel gebissen ins Bein? Nun weinet das Kind und die Mutter noch mehr, sie wünschet den Herzallerliebsten sich her? 6. Und wünschet daneben die Taufe bestellt: ein Lämmlein, ein Würstlein, ein Beutelein Geld? So sagt nur, ich käm', in zwei Tagen oder drei, und grüßt mir mein Bübel und rührt ihm den Brei! 7. Doch halt! Warum stellt ihr zu zweien euch ein? Es werden doch, hoff' ich, nicht Zwillinge sein? Da klappern die Störche im lustigsten Ton, sie nikken und knixen und fliegen davon.

English translation 1. The shepherd’s house stands on two wheels. It sits high on the heath, day and night, A dwelling many would love to have. A shepherd would not trade bed with a king. 2. And should any strange thing happen at night, He just says a prayer and turns over in bed. be it a ghost, witch, or any jolly creature, they can knock and knock, but he’ll not answer. 3. But once, he experienced something that was really too much. It rattled the shutters and made the dog whine. The shepherd drew the bolt, and --Look! Two storks stood there, a man and his wife. 4. The pair bowed politely, And were about to speak, if only they could! What do they want? Did you ever see such a thing? But it will probably be some good news for me. 5. You probably live down there in a house on the Rhein? You’ve probably had a talk with my girl? The baby is crying and the mother even more? She wants her beloved one there? 6. And she wants the christening arranged: a lamb, a sausage, a purse of money? Just tell her I’m coming in two or three days. Bring greetings to my baby and give his mush a stir. 7. But stop! Why are there two of you standing there? It’s not, I hope, twins? The storks clattered their bills happily, nodded and curtseyed and flew off.
