Not sure where to look for guidance in formatting editions: CPDL 64047 looks a little messy at present. Richard Mix 15:45, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

I have fixed the page. My recommendation is to add a category rather than the Arranger template, unless the person is listed in the title. This system needs work, no doubt, especially on Larger work pages with multiple arrangers (or composers or lyricists or voicing etc.). — Barry Johnston (talk) 01:35, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
Sorry Barry, but with a category added at the bottom of the page Eric Esparza might be the arranger of any of the editions on Lydia, Op. 4, No. 2 (Gabriel Fauré). Surely there needs to be a way to gracefully include arranger with the associated edition in Music files. The pages I see with the template either use it in general information: Christus, der ist mein Leben (Chorale), BWV 281 (Johann Sebastian Bach) (is that necessary, given the slippery slope towards adding composer:Gregorian chant to thousands of pages?) or stick it awkwardly after Edition notes: Twenty-fifth day of December (Veinticinco de Diciembre) (Traditional). Yes, Eric Esparza might be the arranger of any of the editions -- but the same is true of SATB, English, Piano, Christian Mondrup, and a cappella on this page: a search directs someone looking for Eric Esparza (or SATB etc.) to the page (not the edition). You have already arrived at the better solution, I see.
The situation:
  1. There are many pages with multiple arrangers.
  2. There are many pages where an arranger is cited in the page title.
  3. Many editors (at least me) would like to see most of the information in General description refer to the original work; much is lost and nothing gained by templates like "Language|3|French|English|German" or "Arranger|2|Eric Esparza|Christian Monrup" – this tends to dilute the details of the original work, which in this case was written in French for solo voice and not arranged by anyone in 1884. This is perhaps not a very big deal on this page, but becomes critical on complex pages with many different arrangers, voicing, languages, or instruments.
This complicated situation illustrates the limitations of the current design of CPDL. Unfortunately perfection here will have to await comprehensive re-design. I am working towards this but it will take some time. — Barry Johnston (talk) 23:14, 15 April 2021 (UTC)

It might be nice though to have a Template:arr that would do the work of {{Cat|parameter 1 arrangements|arr. parameter 1}}. Richard Mix (talk) 03:49, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

This is a good suggestion, I think! Let me work on it a little while. — Barry Johnston (talk) 13:53, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
