Biography

Thomas à Becket was an English-born actor and musician. He is best known for his composition Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean, an anthem written and composed in 1843 for a concert at a museum in Philadelphia. He was commissioned by his fellow singer, David T. Shaw, who falsely claimed authorship when he published it. (Source: The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music, 1996)
