1. Wach' auf, wach' auf, du deutsches Land,
du hast genug geschlafen!
Bedenk', was Gott an dich gewandt,
wozu er dich erschaffen!
Bedenk', was Gott dir hat gesandt
und dir vertraut, sein höchstes Pfand!
Drum magst du wohl aufwachen!
2. Gott hat dir Christum seinen Sohn,
die Wahrheit und das Leben,
sein liebes Evangelion
aus lauter Gnad' gegeben:
denn Christus ist allein der Mann,
der für der Welt Sünd' g'nug getan,
kein Werk hilft sonst daneben.
3. Du solltest bringen gute Frucht,
so du recht gläubig wärest,
in Lieb und Treu, in Scham und Zucht,
wie du solch's selbst begehrest,
in Gottes Furcht dich halten fein
und suchen Gottes Ehr' allein,
daß du niemand beschwerest.
4. Was vormals Unrecht, Sünd und Schand,
das tut man jetzt gut preisen,
was vormals Blei und Zinn genannt,
das heißt man jetzt hart' Eisen:
all' Ding' han sich so gar verkehrt,
Unrecht hat sich so hoch gemehrt,
solch's tut die Tat erweisen.
5. Die Wahrheit wird jetzt unterdrückt,
will niemand Wahrheit hören;
die Lüge wird gar fein geschmückt,
man hilft ihr oft mit Schwören;
dadurch wird Gottes Word veracht't,
die Wahrheit höhnisch auch verlacht,
die Lüge tut man ehren.
6. Gott warnet täglich für und für,
das zeugen seine Zeichen,
denn Gottes straf' ist vor der Tür';
Deutschland, laß dich erweichen,
tu rechte Buße in der Zeit,
weil Gott dir noch sein' Gnad' anbeut
und tut sein' Hand dir reichen.
7. Das helfe Gott uns allen gleich,
daß wir von Sünden lassen,
und führe uns zu seinem Reich,
daß wir das Unrecht hassen.
Herr Jesu Christe, hilf uns nu'
und gib uns deinen Geist dazu,
daß wir dein' Warnung fassen.

 English translation
1. Awake, awake, O German land,
you've had enough of sleeping!
Bethink what God afforded you
and why you were created!
Recall what He has freely giv'n
into your trust, His solemn pledge!
And then you may well waken.
2. God gave His Son, the Christ, to you,
the Way, the Truth, the Life,
His well-beloved Gospel, too;
all by His grace were given:
for Christ alone of mortal men
has paid the price of this world's sin,
a gift that has no equal.
3. The best of fruit your life must bear,
and faithfulness isneeded,
be loving loyal, modest, fair,
treat as you your'd be treated;
cling ever to the fear of God
and seek to honor Him alone,
to no man be a burden.
4. What formerly were wrongs and sins
men often praise as righteous,
what formerly was lead or tin
is now called truly ferrous:
all things are now turned upside down,
and wrong increases all around,
with deeds that are atrocious.
5. Now truth is overwhelmed with lies
and facts ne'er get a hearing,
while falsehoods now wear suits and ties
most often joined by swearing,
and much despised is God's true word,
the truth insulted with a smirk,
but lies are held in honor.
6. Our God gives warning ev'ry day,
to which his signs bear witness,
His judgment waits outside the door.
O land, your sins rejecting,
make here and now repentance true,
while God His grace still offers you,
His hand in grace outreaching.
7. So help us, God, and all as one,
that we retreat from sinning,
and may we help Your Kingdom come
and make a new beginning.
Lord Jesus Christ, stay close to us
and by Your spirit strengthen us
that we may heed Your warning.
