German text Rosenzeit! Wie schnell vorbei,       Schnell vorbei, Bist du doch gegangen! Ach! Wär mein Lieb nur blieben treu,       Bleiben treu, Sollte mir nicht bangen. Schleiche so durch's Wiesental,       So durch's Tal, Als im Traum verloren, Ach! nach dem Berg, da tausendmal       Tausendmal, Er mir Treu geschworen. Oben auf des Hügels Rand,       Abgewandt, Wein ich bei der Linde; Ach! an dem Hut mein Rosenband       Von seiner Hand, Spielet in dem Winde.

English translation Rosebud time—how quick to leave,       quick to leave— once again you’ve left us! Oh, if my love were true to me,       true to me, I’d not even notice. Now I tramp the meadow vale,       meadow vale, sad and lost in dreaming. Oh, by that hill a thousand times,       a thousand times, love he swore unceasing.
