Biography
Albert Friedrich Wilhelm Platte was born in Soest, Germany. He completed training as a music teacher there and taught at the State Asylum for the Blind. When visiting relatives in Saginaw, Michigan, he took over teaching a class of music students and chose to remain. He briefly returned to Germany to study at the Royal Academy of Music, Munich, then permanently immigrated to the United States. He settled in Saginaw and, for a time, operated a music studio in Detroit. He was organist at St. Paul’s Church, served as president of the State Music Teachers’ association, and was one of the best-known teachers of piano, organ, and voice in the state. He died in Saginaw. One of his notable pupils was John Jasper McClellan, Jr. who for two years relocated from Utah specifically to study with him and then served as chief organist of the Salt Lake Tabernacle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1900 to 1925.
